Security and Communications: Protecting What You Have, Hearing What You Need

Two questions run through this section. First: when things are bad, how does your home and family stay safe from people who want what you have? Second, and quietly more important: how do you know what is actually happening outside your front door? Most preppers over-invest in the first question and ignore the second entirely.

Security here is layered and boring on purpose. Communications here is redundant by design. Neither is about heroics.

Communications
#

Cell networks fail exactly when everyone tries to use them. Redundancy starts with a written plan and cheap radios; ham radio is the tier that hears what the internet cannot tell you.

Home Defense
#

The best outcome is the intruder who never enters: lighting, perimeter, doors, and a rehearsed household plan long before any conversation about hardware.

Prepper Tech
#

Modern security extends to data - encryption, document preservation, and the electronics worth protecting.

Where to start this week
#

Walk your property at night, note every place you would break in if you had to, and fix the cheapest one. Add one battery radio and a written contact card to each bag.
