Food and Water: The Two Things You Cannot Improvise

You can survive three weeks without food. You get three days without water, less in heat. That asymmetry should drive every decision in this part of your prepping: water is the urgent problem, food is the patient one, and the households that handle both well treat them as separate projects with separate timelines.

This hub covers the full loop - finding and purifying water, keeping food edible for months or years, growing some of your own, and (if you have the space) stepping up to small-scale livestock. You do not need all of it. Pick the pieces that match your reality and skip the rest without guilt.

Food Production
#

You will not feed a family from four pots on a balcony - but growing even a fraction of your own changes your relationship with groceries and teaches your climate’s calendar.

Food Storage
#

Build in layers, not in one panic-shop: two weeks of the food you already eat, then three months of shelf-stable versions, then long-term staples. Preservation is where storage becomes a skill.

Homestead
#

Chickens are the gateway livestock: cheap, loud, and generous. From there, homesteading scales at whatever pace your land, budget, and patience allow.

Water
#

Store what you can, then learn to find and treat more. The cheapest insurance in all of prepping is a stack of filled containers; the second skill is making questionable water safe.

Where to start this week
#

Fill every container you own with tap water and buy a case of the food you already eat. The whole first step costs an hour.
